Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis, is a condition characterized by inflammation and irritation of the Achilles tendon, which is the large tendon that connects the calf muscles to the back of the heel bone (calcaneus). This tendon plays a crucial role in activities like walking, running, and jumping. Achilles tendonitis can cause pain and discomfort in the back of the heel and lower calf.

Causes:

  • Overuse or Repetitive Strain: Engaging in activities that involve repetitive movements of the ankle, such as running, jumping, or sudden increases in physical activity, can strain the Achilles tendon and lead to inflammation.
  • Tight or Weak Calf Muscles: If the calf muscles are too tight or weak, they can place increased stress on the Achilles tendon during movement.
  • Improper Footwear: Wearing shoes that do not provide proper support or have inadequate cushioning can contribute to Achilles tendonitis.
  • Biomechanical Factors: Abnormal foot mechanics, such as flat feet or high arches, can increase the risk of developing Achilles tendonitis.

Symptoms:

  • Pain and Stiffness: Pain is often felt at the back of the heel and may extend upward along the tendon. The area may be tender to the touch. Stiffness and discomfort can also be experienced, especially in the morning or after periods of rest.

Diagnosis:

  • A healthcare professional, typically a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist, can diagnose Achilles tendonitis through a physical examination, reviewing your medical history, and assessing your symptoms.

Treatment:

  • Rest and Ice: Resting the affected leg and applying ice can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
  • Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Gentle stretching exercises for the calf muscles and Achilles tendon can help improve flexibility and strengthen the surrounding muscles.
  • Orthotic Inserts: Arch supports or heel lifts can help distribute pressure more evenly along the foot and reduce strain on the Achilles tendon.
  • Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can guide you through exercises to improve calf strength, flexibility, and overall lower limb mechanics.
  • Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications may provide temporary relief from pain and inflammation.
  • Corticosteroid Injections: In some cases, a doctor may recommend corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Eccentric Exercises: These involve controlled lengthening of the Achilles tendon during specific exercises and are commonly used as part of rehabilitation.
  • Gradual Return to Activity: Once symptoms improve, gradually returning to regular activities can help prevent re-injury.
